The meridians are like a system of streams, rivers, and oceans in our bodies. Qi (also called Chi, Ki, or Prana), flows through the meridians to the organs and various parts of the body. It is believed that the fascia carries our consciousness throughout the body and is therefor the main Qi channel. The movement of blood through our system is the responsibility of Qi. Harmony, or balance, is maintained when our Qi is able to circulate around the body freely, without obstruction, and is able to be replenished from the universal energy store.

We will be sharing exercises designed to open up the body's meridian system and balance the energy of the associated organs. By opening blockages in the energy pathways, and reawakening our ability to sense energy flow, we can recover our health and a state of balance.

The meridian system runs from the head to the hands, and from the feet back up to the head. The meridian system is responsible for the distribution of Qi energy throughout an intricate fascial network; nourishing and influencing body, mind, and spirit. Acupressure points, distributed along meridians, are portals through which energy enters and exits the body. If energy flows well through the meridians, it is distributed evenly, helping the body and brain to maintain optimal conditions.

Our body has twelve main, plus eight secondary meridians. In general, fourteen are commonly used; and our six week series will focus on the main twelve. Qi comes into the body and then flows through the twelve meridians and collects in two of the eight secondary meridians - the Governing Vessel, and the Conception Vessel.

The twelve major meridians are associated with the internal organs and are named accordingly (see above pic). The twelve meridians are paired, or bilateral, and situated systematically on either side of the body. Each week we will focus on unblocking and awakening different meridian pairs.

You will learn Meridian exercises which combine proper breathing with visualisation and stretching movements. When breath is combined with movement, we can improve our metabolism. Visualisation helps us activate the mechanisms to expel impure, stagnating energy from the body.

This series is suitable for all levels of fitness and body types.  Fitter people can train more intensely, and others are able to practice the movements much more gently.
